This recipe is an easy to make and inexpensive appetizer. All you need to have are slices of tasty bread, slices of ham, cheese sticks, breading and raw eggs. What I like in this appetizer is the crunchy and crisp outside texture and when you give it a bite you will taste the ham and the cheese oozing out of the rolls. It is a good idea to turn your left over tasty bread and turn it into something like this kind of appetizer or snack. Because most of the time if we have loaves of bread left we don’t know what to do with it so it will end up in the waste basket. So I think this recipe is a must try.
A Crunchy Appetizer Delight
Indulge your taste buds with a delectable treat that’s both easy on the pocket and effortless to make! This appetizer promises a symphony of flavors, with its crispy exterior giving way to a delightful burst of ham and cheese with every bite. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to repurpose leftover bread slices, ensuring nothing goes to waste in your kitchen. Let’s dive into the simple steps to whip up this crowd-pleasing snack.
Preparing the Bread for Rolling
Before we embark on our culinary adventure, let’s prep our bread slices. Start by trimming off the toasted edges with a sharp knife, ensuring a clean canvas for our rolls. Once done, grab a rolling pin, or if you don’t have one, a cylindrical jar or glass will do just fine. Flatten each bread slice gently, closing the pores and making them more pliable for rolling. This step sets the stage for our flavorful filling.
Creating the Perfect Roll
Now that our bread is prepped and ready, it’s time to assemble our rolls. Lay a flattened bread slice on a clean surface, and place a piece of ham followed by a cheese stick atop it. Roll the bread snugly around the filling, resembling a jellyroll, and secure the ends and center with toothpicks. This ensures our rolls stay intact during the frying process, keeping all that cheesy goodness trapped inside.
Coating and Frying to Golden Perfection
With our rolls neatly assembled, it’s time to give them their golden coat. Prepare two plates – one with beaten eggs and the other with breadcrumbs. Dip each roll into the beaten eggs, ensuring they’re thoroughly coated, then dredge them in breadcrumbs, providing that irresistible crunchy exterior. Once all rolls are coated, it’s time to bring out the frying pan. Heat oil to the perfect temperature and carefully fry the rolls until they achieve a glorious golden brown hue. This step is crucial for achieving that delightful crispiness that complements the gooey cheese and savory ham inside.
Serving Up the Deliciousness
As our rolls sizzle to perfection, it’s almost time to dig in. But before we do, a quick tip: remember to remove the toothpicks before serving to avoid any unexpected crunches. Once they’re out, arrange your golden brown rolls on a platter and get ready to tantalize those taste buds. For an extra flavor boost, serve them alongside a tangy dip made by mixing mayonnaise with ketchup. The combination of creamy mayo and zesty ketchup adds a delightful contrast to the richness of the rolls, elevating the taste experience to new heights.
